What exactly is Search Engine Optimization?

You've probably heard the term "search engine optimization" or seen the abbreviation "SEO" thousands of times. What do these terms mean and how can you use SEO to increase traffic to your website?

Search engine optimization is the function of increasing the number and quality of website visitors to a website through organic search. When you look at search results on the web, the listings to the left are organic (free) search results. The major search engines that people use when they are doing a search are Google, Yahoo, Bing and Ask.

You will also see "sponsored" or "paid" results. These usually run across the top and right hand side of a search results page. You must pay to have your website listed in these results.

The higher up on the first page of search results a website is, the more traffic will find the website. This is a result of observed patterns of behavior. People's eyes are naturally drawn to the top left of a page since that is how they usually begin to read pages in a book or newspaper. So if your site is in the first position in an organic search, then your site is considered to be "optimized" for that particular search term.

Since organic search generates free traffic to a website it is worthwhile knowing how you go about getting one of the coveted top 10 positions on the first page of search results.

First of all, websites need relevant content about a particular search term to be included in search results.Creating great content, organizing content and presenting the content with proper coding is absolutely necessary for the search engines to index your web page. Indexing a web page by search engines means that they have "visited" your site, examined its content, and organized the content (words, pictures, videos) into their filing system by category. So when someone types in a search request into their search engine of choice, the engine can easily find the results and display them -- all in a matter of fractions of a second.

Perhaps you've heard the term "search engine friendly" describing particular websites. Search engine friendly means that all of the elements of the website have been optimized to facilitate indexing by the search engines. If a site isn't indexed, it can't show up on search results.

Search engine optimization should be part of the overall internet marketing strategy of any website. Having good content and a user friendly website will insure that the right, targeted traffic finds your site and stays engaged with your site long enough to begin a relationship.
